The Beginnings of TECO

چکیده

I came up with the name TECO in 1962 while sitting in Ye Hong Guey, my favorite restaurant in Boston’s Chinatown during my undergraduate years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I had been working on a little program to help me write other programs, a common activity in the day when a computer (the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-1) would be delivered with almost no software. My program had gotten to the point that it needed a name, so my friend Pete Peterson and I were kicking around possibilities and their acronyms. Years later, TECO would be known to mean Text Editor and Corrector and so described in its documentation. However, the original meaning—the one we came up with that night at the corner of Oxford and Beach streets—was Tape Editor and Corrector.

Quantifying uncertainties from additional nitrogen data and processes in a terrestrial ecosystem model with Bayesian probabilistic inversion

Substantial efforts have recently been made toward integrating more processes to improve ecosystem model performances. However, model uncertainties caused by new processes and/or data sets remain largely unclear. In this study, we explore uncertainties resulting from additional nitrogen (N) data and processes in a terrestrial ecosystem (TECO) model framework using a data assimilation system. Th...

In-Vitro Comparative Study of the Effect of Four Finishing and Polishing Tools on Surface Roughness of a Microhybrid Resin Composite

Background and Aim: The complications of unwanted surface roughness of composite restorations are highly common due to the increasing use of this restorative material. Therefore, the present study was designed to compare the effect of four finishing and polishing (F&P) tools on surface roughness of microhybrid resin composites. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was performed on 42...

TEco: an integration model to augment the Web with a trust area for inter-pares interactions

We propose an integrated and modular model called TEco. It is a Web-based trust area in which, through the integration of various systems, users interact with a greater degree of trust. In particular, users: own a Trusted Digital Identity to authenticate keeping anonymity (when required); establish Inter-Pares Interactions based on contracted agreements and knowing each other’s reputation; can ...

Evaluation of the Steelex M600H coagulometer prothrombin time-international normalized ratio assay with Steelex test reagents

INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study was to validate prothrombin time (PT) international normalized ratio (INR) results obtained using Steelex test reagents and a Steelex coagulometer (Steelex Scientific Instrument Company, Beijing, China), in comparison with use of a well-established standard test employing Pacific Hemostasis reagents (Fisher Diagnostics, Middletown, VA, USA) and Teco Coa...

Epistemologically Multiple Actor-centred System: Or, Emacs at Work!

The paper begins with the story of EMACS (short for Editing MACroS), an editor programme originally written for TECO (Text Editor and Corrector) language and PDP-10 machines in the MIT AI Lab by Richard Stallman, from which various more sophisticated versions have been developed. I analyse how the innovation of EMACS took place over time as a socio-technical process. The EMACS story serves to i...
